Conway came to bat in the fourth over after the hosts lost captain Tom Latham (1) cheaply and went on to form a dominating stand with opener Will Young. The duo built a tremendous 138-runs partnership for the second wicket to power the Black Caps comeback.
The home team lost Young for 52 after meeting a run-out, but Conway continued his aggressor role and soon reached his second century in the longest format. Conway then stitched a 50-run stand with senior batter Ross Taylor (31), who is featuring in the penultimate Test of his career.
The left-handed batter looked quite settled and was approaching his second double-ton before falling to the part-time left-arm spin of Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque. Conway scored 122 off 227 deliveries, with the help of 17 boundaries, including a six.
After Conway’s dismissal, Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell formed a 31-run stand for the fifth wicket before Ebadot Hossain cleaned up Blundell on the last ball of the day. At stumps, New Zealand reached 258/5, with Nicholls unbeaten at 32.
Here is how Twitter reacted:
Tom Blundell plays one on for 11 and that ends the opening day at Bay Oval. Devon Conway leading the way with the bat on New Year's Day. Scorecard | https://t.co/Q0I3NvYtx8 #NZvBAN pic.twitter.com/bFikLEaiWy

I think it would be fair to say that Devon Conway is quite good at cricket.

Stumps!
Bangladesh end day one with a late Ebadot Hossain wicket, but it is New Zealand who will be the happier side after being put into bat at the Bay Oval #WTC23 pic.twitter.com/G2IerOt2vk

The first Test century of 2022 goes to New Zealand’s Devon Conway.#NZvBAN pic.twitter.com/mrJLcwZDjO

It's remarkable how Devon Conway in his fourth Test is regarded as a veteran and the glue of the side.
Hardly a fair comparison but Ken Rutherford went into his fourth Test having scored six runs.

I honestly can’t remember any batter I was more certain would get runs every time he bats than Devon Conway. @BLACKCAPS @cricketwgtninc pic.twitter.com/FhWdHiBzvy
