Just one month ago, American Frances Tiafoe stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets at Wimbledon. The Greek earned his revenge on Tuesday in Japan.

The 2019 Nitto ATP Finals champion dismissed Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round at the Tokyo Olympics. The Greek star won the first three games of the match and never relinquished the momentum to triumph after 77 minutes.

Tiafoe made it clear ahead of the clash that he expected Tsitsipas to be ready. “I'm pumped up," the American said. "I know he wants me and I want him."

But with rain delaying outdoor play, Tsitsipas' game proved too difficult to deal with under the roof of Ariake Coliseum. The third seed stayed on top of rallies and did not lose his serve in the match. The seven-time ATP Tour titlist hit nine aces and won all but three of his first-serve points (28/31) to control the action.

Tsitsipas will next play 14th seed Ugo Humbert, who outlasted Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, for a place in the quarter-finals. This is the Greek's debut at the Olympics.

Home home Kei Nishikori backed up his win against Andrey Rublev with a 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1 victory against American Marcos Giron. The Japanese superstar won the bronze medal in singles in Rio de Janeiro, and he is trying to go even further this year. The former World No. 4 will next face Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, who battled past Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.

The ROC had mixed results, as Karen Khachanov beat Australian James Duckworth, while Frenchman Jeremy Chardy clawed past 2021 breakthrough star Aslan Karatsev 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Chardy will face a surprise third-round foe in Great Britain's Liam Broady, who upset seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz, the Miami champion, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

In one of the picks of the third-round matches, Khachanov will play eighth seed Diego Schwartzman, who ousted Czech Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5. Schwartzman leads the big-hitting ROC representative 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head series.
