Third seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury advanced on Thursday at Roland Garros, but some of the other tournament favourites were eliminated on a day of upsets.

The American-British duo eliminated Italian Salvatore Caruso and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5, 6-3 to reach the second round. They are pursuing their second Grand Slam trophy as a team after triumphing at last year’s Australian Open.

The reigning Australian Open titlists, Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek, lost their second-round match. Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev and Alexander Bublik defeated the fifth seeds 7-6(5), 6-1 without facing a break point.

Tomislav Brkic and Nikola Cacic also made a splash by beating fourth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to make the third round. Granollers and Zeballos arrived in Paris with momentum after lifting an ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Madrid. They also were victorious at that level on clay in Rome last year.

This year’s Santiago and Parma champions, Simone Bolelli and Maximo Gonzalez, ousted 2019 Roland Garros finalists and 13th seeds Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin 6-2, 6-3.

Second seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah avoided the upset bug with a 7-6(0), 6-3 win against French wild cards Dan Added and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Colombians are chasing their third title of the year after emerging victorious in Dubai and Barcelona.

Seventh seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, who reunited at the start of 2021, beat veterans Oliver Marach and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 7-5, 6-1.
