Karen Khachanov has begun an ATP Tour season strongly for a third straight year after he reached the Adelaide International 1 quarter-finals on Thursday. The second-seeded Russian struck 16 aces to beat Steve Johnson of the United States 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in just over two hours.
In his first tournament of 2020, 25-year-old Khachanov went 4-1 in singles play to help Russia to the inaugural ATP Cup semi-finals, and he fell to Jannik Sinner in the last four at the 2021 Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne.
Khachanov will next prepare to meet Belarusian qualifier Egor Gerasimov, who is through to his first ATP Tour quarter-final since February 2021 at Montpellier after he knocked out Gianluca Mager of Italy 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Elsewhere, sixth seed Tommy Paul defeated Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-4 in two hours and 35 minutes. Paul lifted the Stockholm Open trophy (d. Shapovalov) in November, and awaits the winner of top-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils and Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina.
