Former Gonet Geneva Open finalist Nicolas Jarry earned his fifth Top 10 win and first since 2019 on Thursday when he upset two-time champion Casper Ruud 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5.

The Chilean, who reached the championship match in Geneva in 2019, struck 12 aces and won 80 per cent (41/51) of their first-serve points to advance after two hours and 32 minutes.

"I am so happy with the way that I played. That was the way I had to play against a top player like Casper," Jarry said. "He is such a grinder that you have to play big and step it up. I am very happy for my game. I didn't play a very good game in the first set when he broke me, but I managed to keep going. I managed to play better and calm, not thinking I had to play extremely well to win the points. It could have gone either way, but I am really happy it went on my side."

Jarry is seeking his second tour-level title of the season this week, having lifted the trophy on clay in Santiago. The 27-year-old, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019, will meet third seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.

Ruud was aiming to win his third consecutive title in Geneva. It is the first time the Norwegian has lost on Swiss soil {17-1), having also triumphed in Gstaad in 2021 and 2022.

Alexander Zverev will take on Jarry in the other semi-final in Geneva. Zverev was leading Wu Yibing 4-1 when the Chinese player withdrew from the pair’s quarter-final clash. Zverev now holds a 6-0 record in Geneva, where he lifted the title on his only previous appearance in 2019.

Could this be the week that Taylor Fritz breaks his clay-court trophy duck on the ATP Tour?

The 25-year-old sent out a statement to the rest of the field in Geneva, where he raced past Ilya Ivashka 6-1, 6-2 with a blistering quarter-final performance at the clay-court ATP 250.

Fritz battled through a three-set test against Marcos Giron in his opening match in Geneva but had no such trouble brushing past the World No. 86 Ivashka in the pair’s first ATP Head2Head meeting. Striking powerfully and with depth off both wings throughout, the second seed broke his opponent’s serve twice in each set and did not face a break point on his own delivery in the 51-minute encounter.

With his 29th tour-level victory of the season, Fritz advanced to his third tour-level clay-court semi-final of 2023. Having fallen in the final four in Monte-Carlo and Munich, the American will hope to maintain his level in Geneva as he chases his maiden ATP Tour championship match appearance on clay.

Standing in Fritz's way to that goal will be Grigor Dimitrov, after the fourth seed rallied to a 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4 win against Christopher O’Connell to reach his first clay-court semi-final of the season. Dimitrov converted four of his 10 break points to wrap a two-hour, 43-minute victory and extend his ATP Head2Head series lead against O’Connell to 2-0.
