Marton Fucsovics fought back to upset #NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 and advance to the second round at Wimbledon for the second time in his career.

The World No. 48, who reached the final at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (l. to Rublev) in Rotterdam in March, hit seven aces and won 75 per cent (56/75) of his first-service points. Fucsovics is now 18-12 on the season.

Sinner, seeded 19th, won his second ATP Tour title in February at the Great Ocean Road Open (d. Travaglia) and leads the way in the ATP Race To Milan. However, the 19-year-old is still yet to win a tour-level match on grass (0-3).

In a lively start in which both exchanged breaks, Sinner started to find his range, playing aggressively as he took his forehand early to dictate proceedings. He hit six winners in the set, finding the decisive break in the 12th game to clinch the opener when Fucsovics went long on a forehand.

Fucsovics started to use his slice backhand to greater effect during the second set, as Sinner started to make errors from the baseline, with nine coming from the Italian’s racquet. The Hungarian broke twice as he levelled.

After another close battle in the third set, where Sinner failed to convert any of his four break points, Fucsovics claimed it 7-5, hitting 12 winners. As the match wore on, Sinner began to struggle on serve, winning just 50 per cent of points (8/16) of his first-service points. The 29-year-old broke three times in the set to advance in three hours and five minutes.

Fucsovics will next play Jiri Vesely, No. 72 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, after the 27-year-old eased past German Yannick Hanfmann 6-1, 7-5, 7-6(5). Vesely, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon 2018 and 2016, hit 8 aces to advance in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Ninth seed Diego Schwartzman led 6-3, 6-4 against Frenchman Benoit Paire when play was suspended due to darkness.

Schwartzman hit 12 winners and won 74 per cent (26/35) of his first-service points as he aims to clinch his first win on grass this year. The Argentine reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2019 (l. to Berrettini) and will next face Liam Broady.

The British wild card defeated one of the 10 Italians in the draw, Marco Cecchinato, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and 49 minutes.
