Dominic Thiem will lead the field at the Mallorca Championships. The World. No. 4 accepted a wild card into the ATP 250 grass-court event, which will be played from 20-26 June.
Thiem suffered a surprising five-set defeat against Pablo Andujar in the first round at Roland Garros, which brought his clay-court record for the season to 4-4. While the 27-year-old reached the semi-finals at the Mutua Madrid Open, he lost in the third round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the second round of the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon.
The Mallorca tournament was originally set to make its debut in 2020, but was cancelled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The reigning US Open champion will try to make a good start to his grass-court season.
Joining Thiem in Spain will be home favourite Pablo Carreno Busta, who has dropped just one set on his way to the fourth round at Roland Garros. Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov will also be in the draw, and both will be hoping to bounce back following their first-week exits in Paris. The 22-year-old Ruud, who is 22-7 on the season, will be looking for his first tour-level win on grass.
Khachanov will be confident he can go far in Mallorca as he holds a good record on grass, having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2018 and the semi-finals at the Noventi Open in Halle in 2017.
