Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini continued their strong season as a team Thursday at the Nordea Open, downing Pablo Carreno Busta and Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-1 to reach their fifth tour-level semi-final of the year.

In a dominant performance, the Italians broke five times and won 76 per cent (25/33) of their first-serve points to advance after 65 minutes. The second seeds, who enjoyed a run to the championship match together in Bastad in 2018, will next play Nikola Cacic and Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

Bolelli and Fognini are aiming to capture their second tour-level crown of the season this week, having lifted the trophy in Rio de Janeiro in February.

Rafael Matos and David Vega Hernandez showed their fighting qualities, edging Andres Molteni and Hugo Nys 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 in one hour and 59 minutes. The fourth seeds, who captured titles in Marrakech and Mallorca in 2022, will next meet Francisco Cerundolo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the ATP 250 clay-court event.

The Argentines saved all eight break points they faced to eliminate Fabrice Martin and Franko Skugor 6-4, 6-2 and reach their first semi-final of the season as a pair in 77 minutes.

Newport Semi-finals Set
Top seeds Raven Klaasen and Marcelo Melo won their second straight-sets match of the week Thursday to advance to the semi-finals at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open, easing past Felix Auger-Aliassime and Benjamin Bonzi 6-4, 6-2. The South African-Brazilian pairing inflicted a second defeat of the day on both of their opponents: Auger-Aliassime was upset by Jason Kubler in the singles draw, while Bonzi fell to John Isner.

Klaasen/Melo advance to face Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow. The third seeds won an all-American matchup against Robert Galloway and Alex Lawson 4-6, 7-6(4), 12-10 by claiming the only Match Tie-break of the day in Newport.

Fourth seeds William Blumberg and Steve Johnson were 7-6(3), 6-3 winners against Max Purcell and Tim van Rijthoven, with Blumberg seeking to repeat as the Newport doubles champion after lifting the title with Jack Sock last year. Johnson is also a former Newport titlist, having won the singles crown in 2018, while Purcell entered Newport on the heels of his first Grand Slam title after winning the Wimbledon doubles trophy alongside fellow Australian Matthew Ebden.

The Americans will face Ramkumar Ramanathan and John-Patrick Smith in the semis after the Australian-Indian duo earned a 6-1, 6-4 win against Radu Albot and Treat Huey.
